Sefton Park fountain
Today I noticed that someone on the Facebook Four Squares page put up an old photo taken at Sefton Park in 1896 showing children playing at the lakeside in front of the fountain.
114 years later, during the summer of 2010, Jayne and I took two of my grandchildren for a day out in Liverpool and had a picnic in Sefton Park. Here are Rhys and Erin striking up a pose in front of the fountain!
Aren’t photographs so incredibly valuable? It is fascinating to look back and see how people, fashions and the landscape have changed over the years. Photographs are not just something to be enjoyed in the short term. They can tell a story of how things used to be, far better than the proverbial thousand words.
Sadly, although many more photographs are being taken these days, hardly any get printed. In this ‘throw-away’ world today, it is far too easy to treat these precious images with contempt.
Millions upon millions of wonderful images that would be so valuable to future generations will simply be lost forever when the hard drives and memory sticks that they are stored on finally bite the digital dust.
For the sake of your children and their children – print your photographs so they too will one day be rediscovered in albums, or even shoe boxes, tucked away in the attic!
